Why do some people cry when meditating?
Sometimes people cry in meditation. A deep blissful feeling comes and the tears run involuntarily. In this article we are going to figure out why it happens and how we are to treat this phenomenon.
There are two types of tears: shokáshru and ánandáshru. Shokáshru – the tears of pain, they run from the inner corner of the eye. Ánandáshru – the tears of bliss, which run from the outer corner of the eye.

Tears of bliss start running on their own when one has achieved deep awareness of the essence of everything going on in the universe.

Tears during Kiirtana
This phenomenon sometimes takes place during the practice of collective or individual singing of the mantra – Kiirtana.

When singing individually one is staying one-to-one with their supreme spiritual goal.

When Kiirtana is sung collectively one is moving in the common rhythm with all the other practitioners, floating on the same emotional wave. The wave may be crude psycho-physical, or may be subtle psycho-spiritual.

At the moments of deep concentration there appears the sensation of the Supreme Consciousness which has come to do Kiirtana and sing the mantra together with you. At such moments you feel the presence of the Divinity permeating everything around. Tears of bliss is the most common and natural reaction in this case.

The causes of “special effects” in meditation

Different symptoms appear in meditation from time to time. All of them are the responses of the nervous system to its contacting the spiritual energy. When the nervous system fails to withstand the intensiveness of this energy it lets the strain out.

The excessive energy is often released with the sound “hum” or with involuntary wincing when sitting in the lotus posture.

Thus, energy discharge takes place as a result of having activated the power which is impossible to contain. When you are sitting quiet and motionless, the tension might grow in the nervous system.
At such moments the best thing is to relax at the same time keeping on concentrating and going deeper and deeper from the psycho-physical level to the psycho-spiritual.
When the energy is discharged (for example, in the form of loud “hum” sound) the concentration fails. Such symptoms may appear after approximately three years of regular practice and may last for about three years on. During all this time the person is unintentionally disturbing other people’s meditation as well as his/her own.

Meditators experiencing some “special effects” may produce in impression of advanced yogis, who have reached some very special state. However, if one is really an experienced practitioner he/she looks just the same as the beginners. His/her body has already adapted to the spiritual energy. On this stage the nervous system has grown strong enough and accustomed to the spiritual energy, so meditation deepens and is done without any symptoms. But in some cases when you reach deeper layers of the mind, Ánandáshru [tears of bliss] start to roll from your eyes. These tears are joyful and they are a good sign.
